Separate Motor Generator (electric traction machine)
The design of the Separated Motor Generator (SMG) offers great advantages over other concepts.
Because of the higher transmission ratios or rotation speeds that can be realized, this concept leads to smaller and lighter drive motors by comparison with the Integrated Motor Generator (IMG).
Today two basic sizes of motor diameter are available to take account of varying installation situations. Torque or power capacity is basically scaled via the active motor length.

E3202 MAHLE GmbH Range Extender
One exceptional feature of the MAHLE range extender engine is its compact dimensions. With a width of 416 mm, depth of 327 mm, and height of 481 mm, it is about the size of a carry-on bag for an airplane. With a mass of less than 70 kg (including the generator), it fits easily into the package and weight distribution concept of the automobile manufacturers. Another advantage is that the engine does not need to be installed in the conventional manner. Any and all installation configurations are possible, from 0° (vertical) to 90° (horizontal).
Downsizing Demonstrator Engine - Second generation
MAHLE has installed its downsizing demon-strator engine in a roadworthy mid-range ve-hicle (VW Passat). The unit, which is loaded with the latest technologies, demonstrates that the combustion engine still has tremendous future potential when it comes to CO2 re-duction and performance.
Fuel consumption for a standard NEDC is only 5.8 liters per 100 km (CO2 emissions of 135 g/km). The engine meets the current EU5 emission standard, and has the potential to reliably meet EU6 limits as well.
HV-PTC (Behr)
Zero Emission vehicles (EV, PHEV,…) engines do not provide enough heat to warm up the passenger cabin. As a new technology to solve this issue, Behr presents high voltage electrical heater (HV-PTC) using PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) ceramics and supplied by main vehicle battery (Voltage range 250-400 V). HV-PTC is expected to be replaced from standard heater core in HVAC. The HV-PTC provides up to 5 kW heating power at 350V, instead of 1-1.5 kW at 13V for existing parts. The HV-PTC is insulated to protect the user against electric shock due to high voltage level. In addition, integration with an electronic controller can optimize power consumption and comfort.
Battery Cooling (Chiller) - Behr
The battery cooling method with coolant is very energy-efficient and requires an AC refrigerant evaporator to cool the coolant (water/glysantine in a so-called “secondary loop”), if the ambient temperature is high (e.g. > 30°C). Behr has developed a special, very compact heat exchanger, known as chiller. This chiller connects the AC refrigerant circuit with the secondary loop of the battery cooling circuit. The temperatures in this secondary loop depends on the operating strategy and on the properties of the battery cells, but are typically between 15°C and 30°C. The high power density of the Behr chiller enables it to be packaged in a small space.
HVAC / Smart (Behr)
The HVAC of the smart fortwo, made by Behr, is produced in our dependance in Hambach, France, where the series production began in autumn 2006. The HVAC is very compact and offers one temperature and one air flow zone. Behr also supplies the corresponding control panel, which is developped and produced by Behr´s joint venture Behr-Hella Thermocontrol (BHTC), located in Lippstadt, Germany.
In comparison to other air conditioning systems in this car segment, the Smart fortwo HVAC from Behr surpasses the average in the categories volume, weight, heat performance, refrigerant capacity, air volume and acoustic.
i2CAC (Behr)
The intake manifold with integrated indirect charge air cooler is the first product which Behr & Mahle are currently developing together. The downsizing of combustion engines is a key task of the future in automotive engineering. Behr’s integrated indirect charge air coolers combines high performance with small space requirement in the frontend. Thanks to the integration in the intake manifold, quick response and low air pressure drop can be achieved. Engine performance can be
improved and even downsizing of turbocharger is possible.
iCAC (Behr)
Consumers become more and more intrigued with fuel consumption of vehicle recently.
So down-sizing engine with turbo charger is one of market trend from a few years ago.
Behr’s water cooled CAC (Charged Air Cooler) can support to improve the total performance of the turbo charged engine.
Behr has 2 types of water cooled CAC. One is “iCAC” (Indirect CAC) and other is “i2CAC” (Integrated Indirect CAC).
Both CACs has many advantages compare to direct CAC (air cooled CAC) from standpoints for packaging, layout, performance and emission.
Behr is serial supplier for the CAC and has under serial development projects with some automotive companies.
So the water cooled CAC also will become one of market trend near future.
ECM / Nissan Micra (Behr)
Behr's joint venture in India (known as Behr India Company Limited) is associated with Nissan's Micra which is Nissan`s first compact car in India by supplying Engine Cooling Module (includes a radiator, condenser and in-tank oil cooler ). It is based on Nissan`s new V-Platform. Nissan honoured Behr India with "Best supplier Award for Delivery" for this project: "Receipt of this award confirms that Nissan recognizes Behr`s performance." Behr India was the only non-Japanese supplier to receive this award.

MAHLE has developed a urea filter with a long-lasting filter media and three innovative heating options. The filter optimally prepares the urea before it is converted into ammonia in the exhaust line for selective catalytic re-duction (SCR).

TopWeld® steel piston for passenger car applications
The TopWeld® steel piston is forged of steel. Two components are welded together to form a large, closed cooling channel. The steel used for the TopWeld® piston is of the grade 42CrMo4, which provides significantly greater strength and rigidity than aluminum. The piston height can thus be reduced by 30 percent. As a result, the contact surface between the piston and cylinder wall is smaller, as is the friction loss, which leads to measurable fuel consumption savings.

Piston ring
The latest downsizing gasoline engines have a total ring stress of about 0.6 to 0.7 Newtons per millimeter. MAHLE has now developed a new, two-piece "x-taper" oil control ring, which improves scraping with directional contact surfaces. This reduces the load on the scraper ring by about half.
Bearing
Vehicles with stop-start systems or hybrid drives place new and more severe demands on the bearing points in the engine, due to the high number of additional starts. MAHLE has addressed this problem, and developed new polymer-coated bearings for the main crank-shaft bearing and the connecting rod's big end bearing.
